Investing With an Operator’s Mindset
Discipline, alignment, and the long view
Rick’s investment approach reflects decades of operating experience and the belief that capital works best when it supports strong leadership, a sound culture, and a durable strategy.
From Builder to Capital Steward
After building RFJ Auto Partners into a $3.5 billion business and leading its $750 million merger with Sonic Automotive, Rick stepped away from day-to-day operations to focus on investing.
Today, through Ford Family Investments, he allocates capital across private equity, venture, real estate, and a small number of operating businesses he stays directly involved in.
He still works closely with founders and management teams, but from a different seat, applying the same operating perspective that shaped how he built his own company.
How Rick Thinks About Investments
Rick doesn’t believe in passive capital. That’s why he first looks for alignment of values, incentives, and long-term vision.
Key considerations include:
Leadership integrity and accountability
Clear operating fundamentals
Thoughtful growth strategy
Respect for culture and people
Long-term value creation over short-term optics
The goal is not financial engineering alone, but sustainable businesses that endure across cycles.
